The conference, which starts at 8pm, will be led by Jihan Sfeir, born in 1970 in Beirut, and specialist of the contemporary Arab world. She is a PhD in History, Societies and Oriental Civilizations and graduated from INALCO.
The Lebanese Constitution of 1926, established by France during its mandate, set up a consensual democracy based on the distribution of power according to religious affiliation. This political system, set up at its birth as an ideal model of coexistence, contributed to the fragmentation of society, the dysfunction of politics and the collapse of institutions. To understand the failure of the Lebanese state, Jihan Sfeir looks at the historical origins of consensual democracy, to explore its functioning, evolution and limits.
The conference will be preceded by a guided tour of the exhibition at 18:30, a drink and a tasting of Lebanese specialties at 19:30.
Price: 15€ - 5€ for students. Reservations at +32(0)65 61 39 02 or reservations@grand-hornu.be , before April 29, 2022
