Constant Malva tells of the malaise of miner's life. In this world with sadly evocative names - the "Burn", the "Worker" - resignation and fatalism permeate the atmosphere as much as the humidity, dust and firedamp. The stultifying routine and fatal accidents are compounded by human mediocrity. An atypical miner, the author fights against degradation through reading and writing. He invites us to share the poetic joys encountered in this quest.
